1. Descartes, Discourse on Method, Part 1 and 2 Problem: “the good sense (reason/power of judging) is the best distributed thing in the world, but there are diverse opinions and no consensus on any issue.” (Implication: how can we know the truth/ undoubtable knowledge?) Solution: one must find out a right method to apply the good sense well. What method, then? (1) Descartes rules out schooling (book-learning) and traveling, and chooses meditation. “I resolved one day to study within myself too and to spend all the powers of my mind in choosing the paths that I should follow.” (2) Meditation follows the principle of doubt: “Never accept anything as true that I did not know; include in my judgments only the things that are present to my mind so clearly and distinctly that I can never call them into doubt.” (Cartesian Doubt) Topic: “Method” - For what reason/problem/issue does Descartes talks about method? - What is the proper method and the principle of method? 2. Descartes, Meditation 1 & 2 Practice of meditation (doubting) Step 1: all senses are deceptive. Conclusion: while sense perceptions are deceptive, the fact that all bodies have extension is undeniable/indubitable truth. Step 2: What if I am being deceived by God to believe that 2+3=5, and that a square has four sides, although these are not true? (Geometric or arithmetic truth ). Conclusion: God cannot will to deceive me, because he is supremely good.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
