Matthew Gilmore Unit 4 Vocabulary 1. Infiltration - permeation of liquid into something by filtration. 2. Transpiration - the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata. 3. Evaporation - the process of turning from liquid into vapor. 4. Condensation - the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid. 5. Runoff - the draining away of water, including substances carried in it, from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc. 6. Sinkhole ( Karst ) - a cavity in the ground, especially in limestone bedrock, caused by water erosion and providing a route for surface water to disappear underground. 7. Oxbow Lake - a curved lake formed at a former oxbow where the main stream of the river has cut across the narrow end and no longer flows around the loop of the bend. 8. Groundwater - water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. 9. River Basin ( Watershed ) - the portion of land drained by a river and its tributaries. 10. Tributary - a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake. 11. Stream Load - a geologic term referring to the solid matter carried by a stream . Erosion and bed shear stress continually remove mineral material from the bed and banks of the stream channel, adding this material to the regular flow of water. 12. Aquifer - a body of permeable rock which can contain or transmit groundwater. 13. Zone of Saturation - the ground below the water table. 14. Zone of Aeration - The groundwater nearest the surface. 15. Water Table - the upper surface of the zone of saturation. 16. Subsidence - the gradual caving in or sinking of an area of land. 17. Salt Water Intrusion - the movement of saline water into freshwater aquifers, which can lead to contamination of drinking water sources and other consequences. 18. Point Source - any single identifiable source of pollution from which pollutants are discharged.
