Ciaran Harvey Assignment 4 M1-Explain the relationship between CAD and other software/hardware used in manufacturing. CAD is used widely throughout engineering companies because of the many benefits that it provides. It is extremely easy to use once you get the hang of it and it can greatly reduce the amount of time needed to design a component. CAD can be combined with different machines to not only design a component but to create it as well. For example, one machine that CAD is combined with is a CAD-CAM machine. CAD stands for computer-aided design and CAM stands for computer-aided manufacturing. CAD-CAM's are used mainly to create prototypes of the component. CAD-CAM’s are very important in manufacturing processes because prototypes of components need to be created. This is because once the prototype is created, the engineers can find/look for any faults with the design. If there are no faults then mass production can begin. Another reason why CAD is used widely in the engineering workplace is because of how versatile/widely recognised it is. For example, once you create a component using CAD, the same document can be used all around the world because most engineering companies adhere to the same standards. The relationship between CAD and other software/hardware is very important in the engineering workplace. This is because it is extremely difficult to use modern methods of production without some sort of computer-aided design to show the machines what to do. CAD allows engineers to create extremely accurate and complex components that would otherwise be nearly impossible to recreate without CAD. The same applies to CNC machines. CNC stands for computer numerical control which means that the machines are controlled by a Computer rather than someone manually cooperating it. These machines wouldn’t work without the help of a computer/computer-aided design to show it what to do. CAD has helped engineering companies tremendously over the past couple of decades by

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
