Berndt 1 Faith Berndt Brittany Smart English 101 3 Sep 2019 Literacy Narrative How did I learn to read and write? What is my literacy journey? Every person’s literacy development involves different experiences and life events. Most people believe (including myself, at one point) that literacy means someone’s comprehension or knowledge of a specific subject, such as Digital Literacy. But it mainly means the simple ability to read and write. I don’t necessarily remember the first time I read a book or wrote a short story. But I do recall certain events that have shaped my view on reading and writing. I predominantly remember two specific moments in my life that really engulfed me into this wonderful world of literature; the day I picked out my first book, and the day I received my first journal. Personally, I prefer to write more than I enjoy reading, but being a good reader just comes naturally to me. When it comes to reading books, my family used to require an hour of “reading time” every day. So, by fourth grade, I was already reading at a 12th grade reading level. I never viewed reading as an enjoyable task, since my options for books were the tedious ones at school or whatever sappy, cowboy-love-story my mom was reading that week. I do, however, remember getting to pick my first book from the library with my mom. She always wanted to pick my books for me, and always from the children’s area. Which, in her defense, I
