DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES 2 belong to, observes the types of writing and communication within my community, reflects on my experiences in my community dealing with authority, and finally takes a look at the idea that those individuals not under an authority title (such as a coach) also hold authority within their community. I chose my high school’s varsity volleyball team as my discourse community, and I explain my authority on the team, how I gained this authority over time, and what my authority looks like. Along with this, I mention how others could learn form my experiences and benefit from them. Many believe that only the designated leaders of a discourse community hold the power; however, in my case it differs given that I am a senior athlete and hold a captain position on the team. Someone who has authority in a discourse community is one who sets an example for others, someone who leads the people and takes charge over responsibilities, and one who others look up to for guidance and come to when they seek help. Eastwood High School’s volleyball program is a prime example of a discourse community, given that we all follow the same rules, have the same values and principles, and are set on achieving a common goal. Spending more time with my team than my family is normal, especially in season; therefore, we tend to become very close and personal with one another. Our four coaches tend to have the authority in our small discourse community. It is rather strange the way the authority is divided up among our four coaches. The head of varsity and the volleyball program as a whole, Coach Beck, sort of owns an immense part of that authority within our community. The second
