Page 2 Counting Sheep: Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Lions in the American West When we look at the population issue for the Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep over the past decades, there are a number of factors to take into consideration when choosing a side in this national debate. Many biologists believe that the primary reason for this continuous decline of bighorn sheep in the region is due to an overgrowing mountain lion population that preys on the sheep, and that the best way to address the issue is to moderate the number of mountain lions. Other conservationists, like members of the Mountain Lion Foundation, think that the link between mountain lion depredation of Sierra Nevada bighorn’s is not strong enough to justify the culling of the species, and that morally it does not make sense to kill one species in an effort to save another (that ultimately may or may not work). They believe that there are a number of other factors playing a larger role in this ecosystem that should be taken into consideration before blaming the mountain lions, such as recent harsh winter conditions as well as disease that has been spread from domestic sheep. Personally, I agree with the idea of culling the mountain lion population and urge the California senate to vote yes on the proposed legislature regarding Bill 560. I think that the alternative solutions to this problem do not seem as promising and with the Sierra Nevada
