The legacy of racism and imperial ambition has never been fully accounted for, acknowledged, or erased. Today, there is still a global “color line” that serves as a major defining feature of world political interactions.

WHAT’S PAST IS PROLOGUE? Race and empire—the “White Man’s Burden.” The international slave trade. U.S. territorial acquisition, rights, and statehood. Belief in civilized versus uncivilized peoples.

VESTIGES OF EMPIRE Decolonization never really complete; European states still hold overseas territory and “rule over” informal empires. Upon independence, former colonies struggled for true equality with established states. Old patterns of behavior—e.g. Western “wars of choice”—still occur with some frequency.
