RUNNING HEAD: JUVENILE PROCESSES 2 Juveniles are processed differently between state and federal courts. One of the major differences is that when a crime is committed, a criminal court prosecutes adults. Juvenile courts prosecute juveniles who commit delinquent acts. However, depending on the severity and the seriousness of the crime and the age of the juvenile, the juvenile can be prosecuted as an adult. For example, a person who is eighteen or older is considered an adult and would be prosecuted as such. “A person who commits a crime while aged eighteen or older may not be tried under the Act but must be proceeded against as an adult.” (DOJ, 2018, para 3). “In 1974, Congress adopted the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (hereinafter referred to as "the Act").
