Chapter 2 This chapter focuses on the application of data analytics on the operations of the business specifically in sorting solutions for the problem using the inside out approach in data gathering wherein the processes in the operations are analyzed and probable data are listed down in order to generate possible data that will be used in reporting and analytics. In the succeeding portion of the chapter, three (3) problems relating to Drugstore/Pharmacy operations narrated and discussion on the alternative solutions to the problem, decision and specific courses of action. Case Problem 1. Carlton High Infirmary Carlton High (CH) is a privately-owned school that is located in a center of a flourishing town with only over 400 thousand in population. CH is also widely known around town because of its fully equipped infirmary and pharmacy. Dr. Michelle Luis is the director of the infirmary and he has 5 medical staff under him. The infirmary and pharmacy do not only cater to students but is also open to walk-in patients. Although it is fully-equipped with medical facilities, the infirmary has only 25 bed capacity and caters outpatient and ambulatory cases only. In the middle of spring in 2006, one medical staff reported that they run out of some prescription drugs since there was an unexpected influx of non-student walk- in clients. As a result, some sick students were not given the medication right away and they have to purchase from the nearest pharmacy outside town which is approximately 20 miles away. A member of the board of Carlton High complain about the incident that students should be the priority of the services. PROBLEM/S OF THE GIVEN SITUATIONS: 1) The infirmary caters non-student walk-in clients when it should only prioritize the students of Carlton High. ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION 1 TO PROBLEM 1 Define the criteria for accepting walk-in clients Criteria: o Emergency Cases (eg. Accidents, Labor, etc.) o Outpatient o Ambulatory Cases

Advantages: The supply of prescription drugs and medical facilities will be enough to cater all patients. Medication/treatment would be available right away for the patient’s usage Clients would be aware of the transaction process. Number of staffs providing service in appropriate ratio with the patients. Disadvantages: May seem and look unethical to other patients/clients. Dissatisfaction of some clients and may cause misunderstandings and rumors regarding the new rule. ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION 2 TO PROBLEM 1 Additional purchase of inventory drugs and supplies especially prescribed medicines. Advantages: Less possibility of shortage of medicines. Higher rate of satisfaction from the clients. Higher sales or turn over Disadvantages: Additional expenses.
