Communicating Science All good assessment is indistinguishable  from curriculum and serves as  a learning activity in itself. Examples of Assessment Strategies: * Story Writing —Describe a day in the life of a bee. Imagine you are a bee, tell  what your day was like, what you ate, etc.  Stories have long helped people make  sense of their observations about the world—myths and  legends.  Allows  students to merge communication skills and creativity to relate knowledge about  science, a motivating context for telling what you know.  Good story writers are  not necessarily good test takers. * Letter Writing— Write a letter to Sherlock Holmes explaining your technique  for taking fingerprints. Helps to articulate steps in doing an activity, an  experiment, or solving a problem.  Raise issues, describe reasoning. Letters and  persuasive writing have long been central to the communication process of math  and science. * Advertisements  —Create an advertisement comparing products after doing  consumer-testing experiments.  Using scientific results to convince others,  persuasive writing.  Incorporates societal aspect of doing science.
