When I was in middle school, 1976, I tried to convince my father to get a PET computer. They looked
“cool” then. We ended up with a TRS-80 because he loved Radio Shack. The Commodore 64 came
next. I remember calling a friend from college in 1987 and we thought “wow this is cool”. We had
phone modems where we placed the old rotary phone handle face down and texted each other on the
TRS-80. My introduction to computing and BASIC.
I digressed, but the memories swarmed back. BASIC was simple, easy to learn and use. It thereby
enabled all students, not just the Science and Math students, to use a computer according to the
