Description of Protagonist: Piscine Molitor Patel is the protagonist and narrator of Yann Martels’s Life of Pi. He was born in Pondicherry, India, grow up among wild animals as his father is a zookeeper. Pi’s unusual name was taken from a famous swimming pool in Paris. As a child, Pi has a passion for religions, as he practices Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. The main story writes about Pi who rehearses about his childhood and the ship crash which changed his life to the Japanese officials. Even though the story goes back and forth in time, the novels pursue Pi's growth and advancement as a bildungsroman. Pi is an ambitious, outgoing and high-strung child, reliant on his family for protection and supervision. His only involvement at school is studying as much as he can for zoology and religion, and avoiding his classmates mispronouncing his names. When the ship drown, Pi is split out from his family, remain on the boat with a Bengal tiger. The disaster brings him challenges: he must become independent even though he bemoans the loss of his family and worries about his life.
