Chapter 9 Terms Accommodation: mental process of modifying existing schemes and creating new ones in order to incorporate new objects, events, experiences, and information. Assimilation: when new events, experiences, events, and information are incorporated into existing mental schemes. Attachment: early close relationship formed between infant and care giver. Authoritarian Parents: parents that make arbitrary rules, expect obedience from their children, and punish misbehavior. Authoritative Parents: set high but realistic standards, enforce limits, and encourage open communication and independence. Babbling: Vocalization of basic units of sound Centration: a child’s tendency to focus on one dimension of a stimulus Concrete operations stage: Piaget’s third stage of development from 6 to 11 years during which a child understands conversation and is able to attend to two dimensions of a stimulus.
