In January, 1890, Rizal left for Brussels, Belgium. But he did not stay long in that city for some important matters are needed to be fixed. He saw many of his countrymen in this Spanish City. Spending money in gambling, he said to them, “if it was gambling that you wanted to do, you could have all stayed in Manila and not gone all the way to Spain.” In 1891 he went to Biarritz and then went back to Paris again. What is Ghent? - is famous university in Belgium. Before he went to Ghent, Belgium, he finished his manuscript in his second novel El Fili unmindful of Suzanne Jacoby’s enticing affection. He began writing in Calamba in 1887. And then in London and more in Paris, Madrid and Biarritz. He finally finished his manuscript in Biarritz on March 29, 1891 after 3 long years. On July 5, 1891, from Belgium, Rizal moved to Ghent His reasons in moving to Ghent is - (1.) the cost of printing in Ghent was cheaper than in Brussels. (2.) to escape the enticing attraction of Petite Suzzane Jacoby. He met 2 compatriots in Ghent which are Jose Alejandrino from Pampanga and Edilberto Evangelista from Manila. Dr. Jose Rizal lived in a cheap apartment with his flat mate, Jose Alejandrino in 32 Rue de Flandre. It was hard for them because life is frugal and, subsisting on the barest necessities. She said, “it would have much be cheaper if it does not include the breakfast.” Rizal bought tea, sugar, alcohol and a box of biscuits. Upon arriving in their flat, Rizal opened the biscuits and divided it into two, partly for him and for Jose for the next 30 days.
