New Atheism - Somewhere between 2-15 percent of the global population self- identifies as atheist. - A growing voice within this movement is “new atheism,” as evidenced by the popularity of the books written by the “four horsemen.” - One must keep in mind that atheism, like any other large movement (whether “religious” or not) takes many different forms, and “new atheism is only one voice among many others. Sam Harris - Primarily known for his first two books on religion: The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason (2004), and Letter to a Christian Nation (2006) - Key concern is the danger that “belief” and “faith” now post to the world. - While Harris never quite defines his terms, he opposes belief and faith to reason, arguing that the former is blind and irrational (which is what leads to it being so easily dangerous) - Harris is perhaps the most confrontational of the four horsemen, as he singles out religious “moderates” as contributing to the problems belief/faith promote as well as unambiguously singling out Islam (along with Judaism and Christianity, though to an obvious lesser extent) as the most violent of the world religions.
