Accessed 24 Jan. 2018. Ernest’s Young childhood: 1.Gaines was born on the River Lake Plantation in Louisiana and worked as a laborer on a sharecropping field until he was nine. He grew up alongside his twelve siblings and was raised by his handicapped aunt who served as a role model to some of his later works. 2.He was a very adventurous boy who enjoyed playing in the swamps and participating in his aunt’s activities. However, it wasn’t until high school that he developed a passion for reading due to his father’s interest. His parents split in 1941 and Gaines chose to spend time with his mother in Vallejo, California. College Life: 1.He enrolled at Vallejo Junior College and subsequently after enlisted in the military and served in the Korean War. When his tour ended, he ventured to San Francisco State College where he received his bachelor’s degree. There he began interested in writing and pursued it at a graduate program at Stanford University. The beginning of recognition: 1.During this creative writing seminar was where he earned some critical awards such as the Joseph Henry Jackson award. This motivated him to strive harder and withdrawing from Stanford, he fully devoted himself to full time writing. Early Publications: 1.He initially did not receive much acclaim for his first novel named, “Catherine Carmier”. But as more books became released, he gained popularity among the masses. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and A Gathering of Old Men was a success and was very resourceful in boosting his career. These two novels received the California Book Award, a prestigious award. Awards: 1.“Gaines won an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A lesson Before Dying received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.” 2.“In 2000 Gained was awarded the National Humanities Medal by the National Endowment for the Humanities and in 2004 he was nominated for the Nobel PEACE Prize in Literature.”

What makes a man? 1.Grant must reverse all association of being a hog and dislodge any belief that the defense attorney placed in Jefferson’s mind. He instead must implant manhood into Jefferson. Even though Jefferson is fundamental to the plot of the novel, it is Grant’s story as he molds Jefferson into becoming a better human being. They both have to experience altercations in themselves
