Description of the music Malaika is different than any traditional popular music in the U.S. Its sung in Swahili Combines Jazz and traditional African melodies and language It serves a greater meaning than just sound, it sparked an empowerment movement in South Africa I chose this song based on the translation of the words, the empowerment I felt after reading the translation. Although South Africa is a place of oppression for many women Mama Africa wrote music to try and change this series of oppression for her people
