Cultural differences created communication as a response to a conflict. Asian and American had a very different culture to be compare with. They do not have a lot to talk about, the difference is on how they behave in managing a conflict situation due to their social upbringing. However, for Asian people they are belong to collectivist culture and they will think about others before make any decision that try to negotiate with, unlike American people. In this context, face refers to identity or someone personality as we let other people see or as a public image. Meanwhile, Face Negotiation Theory talked about keeping or saving face in conflict situation according to the culture they involved. Every difference culture will determine their own way on how to negotiate without making any shame towards other people, also help in create a response to the conflict. This theory created by Stella Ting-Toomey in 1985, a professor of Human Communication at California State University. Thus, before the existence of this theory, Stella found that most of researchers were biased to Western culture and only showed their viewpoints, and assuming that Eastern culture are more collectivist and not individualistic cultures. She also had an disagreement with interpersonal conflict communication, that caused her to create this face theory negotiation. Stella also listed five types of conflict style that can be used in this kind of theory. First, dominating which can be defined as an individualistic approach to make decision by dominating or controlling. Second, avoiding that is show about collectivist approach of staying away from the conflict. Third, an obliging is a collectivist approach of giving up. Next is about compromising, as it is an individualistic approach to negotiate to come to a solution. Last one is integrating, an individualistic approach to work together to reach a solution. 2
