8.1 reply In my professional opinion, there is a need to promote, recruit and hire bilingual social workers and psychologists. This promotion should occur at the under-graduate level by "planting the seed" of the rewards of this career.Do you feel your current agency meets the need for bilingual therapists? If not, how does your agency deal with the need to provide services to bilingual clients? With the influx of students who speak other languages, this writer’s agency has added a preference/requirement for jobseekers to speak Spanish, especially the social workers and therapist. Spanish is by far the most popular non-English language spoken at home with roughly 34 million speakers nationwide (Balderamma, 2008). We would be doing a disservice for the students that we must provide education for if we did not have employees who spoke their language and have an understanding of their culture and what they do. This writer is not too sure what takes place in an intake process, but she would assume that the intake specialist would accept students that we can care for and not ones we cannot help due to inadequate services/
language barriers. As we are equipped for Spanish and French speakers, we are not equipped for any others. ReferencesBalderamma, A. (2008). Eight industries needing bilingual workers. As students, all of you are faced with an attempt to balance school, work and family. As a manager in this field, you are charged with no only mananging your own self-care, but also insuring your staff is not about to walk out the door due to burnout.
