CHAPTER 6 - MENTAL ILLNESS Factors that affect mental health Economic and social factors: rapid changes, stressful work, & isolation Unhealthy lifestyle choices: sedentary, substance abuse Exposure to violence: child abuse Personality factors : poor self-control, poor decision making skills, low self-concept Spiritual factors Cultural factors Changes or impairments in the structure and function of the neurologic system: cerebral abnormalities Psychosocial developmental level and issues Risk factors for mental abuse & substance abuse A history of early aggressive behavior Lack of parental supervision A history of substance abuse Drug availability Poverty History Biographical data These answers provide a baseline data about pt’s level of conciousness, memory, speech pattern, articulation or speech defects Higher socioeconomic level = healthier lifestyle. Unhealthy marriage can affect one’s mental health Identifies as male or female? Female = depression. Males = substance abuse (USUALLY) History of present health concern Tension headaches seen in ppl with stressful situations Anxiety disorders = hyperventilation, palpitations Delirium: Sleep-wake cycle may be revered ; Moodswings, anxiety, fearfulness Dementia: Flat affect, agitation Depression : Decreased sleep + awaken early ; sadness, apathy, irritability, anxiety Signs of violent behavior: loud, tense posture, pacing, throwing things, hitting wall, hitting self Personal health history Clients who have depression early = twofold increased risk of dementia Head injuries/meninigitis/stroke/encephalitis affect developmental & mental health Military combat = PTSD Family history Anxiety, depression, alzheimers, schizo, bipolar disorder are genetic Lifestyle and health practices Dementia & alzheimers have trouble with ADLs Energy levels: anxious pts = restless ; depressed pts = fatigued ; eating disorders =
