CHAPTER 8 & 9 - ASSESSING GENERAL HEALTH STATUS & VTIAL SIGNS + PAIN Physical development and body build - Lack of subcutaneous fat w/ prominent bone = malnutrition - Abundant fatty tissue = obesity Gender and sexual development - Delayed puberty, female w/ male characteristic & vice versa Apparent age as compared to reported age - Can look older due to manual labor, alcoholism, chronic illness, smoking Skin condition and color - Yellow in light skin ; gray cyanosis in dark skin ; extreme pallor or flushed skin Dress and hygiene Posture and gait - Scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis. - Older males may have kyphosis .. older women may waddle due to narrow base Level of consciousness Behaviors, body movements, and affect Facial expression Speech Vital signs - Reflects status of: respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, peripheral vascular, & metabolic - Temperature: - Select route based on patient age & condition - Tympanic temperature ( 36.7-38.3 & 98-100.9 ) higher than oral temperature - Usually good measure bc is is close to internal carotid - Oral temperature ( 35.9-37.5 & 96.6-99.5 ) - DO NOT use on comatose pt - Axillary temperature ( 35.4-37 & 95.6-98.5 ) *0.5 ( 1 ) lower than oral* - Temporal temperature ( 36.3-37.9 & 97.4-100.3 ) *0.4 ( 0.8 ) higher than axillary* - Rectal temperature ( 36.3-37.9 & 97.4-100.3 ) -
