Muslim fundamentalism connected people and leveled them out Communists - politicians, intellectuals and some cadets/young officers o Stage coup o Afghanistan not a good place for communism Babrak Karmal o Soviets increase aid to Afghanistan o Install Babrak Karmal in 1980 Brezhnev’s doctrine- once you go communist you can’t go back Brezhnev sent in 100,000 troops to keep system from falling apart, and placed a Moscow Oriented Stalinist in control.(Babrak Karmal) Soviets afraid if communism fell in Afghanistan a domino effect would occur and all the other stans would stop being communist.
