Name the two types of inflammatory bowel disease. o Two forms of disorders are Crohn’s Disease Describe the underlying etiology of Crohn’s disease. o Crohn’s Disease is hereditary . There is a 15-20% chance patient will receive disease if a 1rst degree relative has the disease. If both parents have disease, then child has 50% chance of acquiring Crohn’s Disease. o Crohn’s Disease is also due to the immune system. Chronic inflammation leads to production of cytokines that initiate an autoimmune response. o Crohn’s is also triggered by environmental factors . o Viruses/bacteria can cause the body to go through an immune response that does not shut off after infection. o Onset is usually in adolescence/early adulthood ; Most likely to see in Caucasians. Describe the symptoms/clinical manifestations associated with Crohn’s disease. o Crohn’s Disease= “Regional Enteritis” o Inflammation of GI tract all the way to the serosa mucosal later o Granulomas-benign tumors- are frequently present (cobblestone appearance) o Frequent Fistula development (Inflammatory response develops fistulas that when healed are replaced by fibrotic tissue.) o Scarring, strictures, obstruction (Fistulas can lead to recurrent strictures o Crohn’s Disease most commonly affects ileum & colon. It can affect any portion of the GI tract from mouth anus. o Crohn’s Disease is usually in patches while Ulcerative Colitis is continous. o Symptons of Crohn’s Disease Diarrhea Abdominal pain/cramping Tenesmus (urgency to defecate) Blood/mucus in stool Weight loss Fever Anorexia Delayed growth in pre-pubescent patients Perianal fistula (abscess near anal gland) Describe the tests and procedures used to diagnose Crohn’s disease. o
