Exam 1 Study Guide Chapter 1 Definition of psychology and definitions of key components o Definition:  The scientific study of behavior and mental process o Key Components:   Science:  objective; the use of systematic methods to observe, describe,  predict, and explain. Behavior:  observable, overt actions (talking, facial expressions, and  movement) Mental Process:  Un-obdervable, covert behavior (thinking, feeling.  Remembering) Who is founder of psychology? o William Wundt:  Father of psychology. Had the psychology lab at the University of  Leipzig in 1879. Used a telegraph to study reactions. Believed the mind was made up of thoughts and experiences. Created Objective Introspection: Examining and measuring one’s own  thoughts and mental activities. What field did psychology originate from? What is structuralism and what psychologist is associated with it? o Edward Titchener:   Took Wundt’s ideas to Cornell University and expanded upon  it. His new view was called structuralism because of the focus on the structure of  the mind. He believed that Objective introspection could be used on thoughts and well  as physical sensations. Died to many fighting over which key elements of experience where most  important. Introspection o Objective Introspection:  Examining ones own thoughts and mental activities. What is functionalism and what psychologist is associated with it? o William James:  a Harvard professor who was into Darwinism and natural selection.  Also belived that traits were pasted on to their offspring. Not what you feel (Wundt) but rather how you feel.
