Reported his experimental results of genetic studies in peas in 1865. Most believed in blending inheritance . Md l ' it td ti l t Mendel's experiments suggested particulate inheritance . A Little More History Mendel's ideas ignored until around 1900. Mendel knew nothing about chromosomes or their movements chromosomes or their movements. Just prior to 1900 mitosis and meiosis were observed. The actual "particles" of inheritance are genes . Why Mendel Succeeded Chose pea plants which normally self fertilize. Used pure breeding varieties. Chose traits with distinctly contrasting forms. Followed one characteristic at a time. Followed characteristics for many generations. Obtained large numbers of offspring. Analyzed results using the laws of probability. He was lucky: 5 of his 7 traits were not linked.
