American Foreign Policy during the Cold War Hello Professor and classmates; The three American foreign policies during the Cold War that will be the focus of this discussion include The Berlin Airlift, Containment , and the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"). The Berlin Airlift was the result of the first confrontation of the Cold War when the Soviets enacted a blockade of Berlin, Germany. The goal of this policy was to force the city's residents to rely on them, while the Allies, such as the US, Britain, and France to withdraw from the city. Instead of retreating, the Allies began supplying the city with food and supplies via cargo planes, an operation that lasted over a year (Anderson, 2013). The Soviets eventually relented and lifted the blockade. Over 2.3 million tons of food and supplies were delivered to Berlin's residents during the airlift, which proved to the Soviets that the Allies were not going to leave Europe to the menaces of communism (OpenStax, 2019).
