Spring 2009 Assignment 4B Statutory Authority: Internal Revenue Code Introductory File Memorandum Assignment 4B is a writing assignment rather than a quiz. A hard copy of a file memo must be submitted to the instructor's secretary as explained below. In doing tax research, your search for a solution may begin and end with the Code. Consequently, it is imperative to read the Code carefully. The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the Code. For this reason, you are to use only the Code in answering the problem !!!!!!!! Do not research or cite regulations, etc., for this assignment. Do not research or cite CCH or RIA explanations. (You may access the Code through either of those services.) Note: The new CPA exam will require you to find a rule in the Code and apply it to solve a problem. In reading the Code, watch for: Special phrases that are defined elsewhere in the same Code Section or another Code Section Cross references between Code Sections The use of the words "and" and "or" This assignment includes an e-mail from Mel Smith to your accounting firm. You have been assigned to research the problem. (If you have additional questions, you may contact Mel by e-mailing the instructor through this web site.) You must address Mel’s situation by writing a memo to the file (i.e., a file memo).
