CM 3400 Assignment #2 1. The main use of asphalt is pavement construction and maintenance. Asphalt is also used in sealing and waterproofing structural components, such as roofs and underground foundation. 2. The 2 main types of asphalt plants are Batch plants and Continuous (Drum) plants. Some differences include: A) Batch plants create Hot Mix Asphalts in separate batches, while Drum plants produce HMA continuously. B) In drum plants presized cold aggregates are fed into a drum, along with preselected mix design proportions. The aggregates are dried and mixed with asphalt cement, which is introduced at the end of the drum in a continuous process. In batch plants unsorted aggregates are introduced into a dryer and then screened into different sizes, stored in hot bins, and fed, by weight, into a separate mixer where the hot aggregates are mixed with asphalt cement. C) Batch plants go as far in the process as mixing the asphalt, but Drum plants mix, store and load the completed asphalt mix. 3.
