The story is about a dying woman’s reminiscence of being left at the altar on her wedding and the fear of her being jilted by God as did the husband to be. The author of the story was born in Indian Creek, Texas in 1890 and her mother died when she was only two years old. The setting of the story is the bedroom of the dying granny Weatherall, and here, she reviews her life and thinks about her impending death. Her thoughts go back to the time when she was left at the altar, jilted by George her fiancé. “she has put on the white veil and set out the white cake for a man” who did not arrive. It is a recollection of the jilting in granny’s life, “… when the cake was not cut but thrown out and wasted”. I find the story to be a reflection of the many women in the modern society who become
