Danielle Britt Why did certain religious groups assert pacifistic, loyalist, or patriotic/revolutionist stances? As the tension between England and the colonies grew, people began to become divided in their loyalties, and their stances on the war were often influenced by their religious beliefs. The Mennonites, Schwenkfelkers, and Quakers religious doctrines forbid them from violence; however, each group found alternate ways to show their political stance despite their pacifist religions. The Mennonites and Schwenkfelkers took a patriotic stance by paying tariffs and fines to the government they supported while the Quakers showed loyalty to England by boycotting illegal goods and revolutionist merchants. While many Anglicans remained loyal to the crown, some members of the Church of England took revolutionist stances by refusing to participate in any church procedures that paid homage to England. The religious groups asserted their pacifistic, loyalist, and patriotic stances in congruence with their particular religious beliefs. The Mennonites and Schwenkfelkers took extremely pacifistic stances towards the Revolutionary War because they were “not at liberty in Conscience to take up Arms to conquer [their] enemies” 1 . They thought the doctrine of Jesus Christ compelled them to “love their enemies and not to resist Evil” which they interpreted to mean God would take care of their enemies in His own way 2 . For example, the Mennonites believed they could conquer the Enemy through prayer and therefore refused to use weapons or violence to harm anyone
