Julia Joseph SOC-220 March 17, 2019 Nancy Servatius Inequity in the workplace Gender inequality is a universal social problem. It mostly happens in the workplace where a lot of the beliefs are that one sex is superior to another and over powers the other sex. This is not just in corporate America but it is embedded in societies structure. Let’s look at this social problem it its social context, use sociological imagination to see how this social problem is influenced by society, discuss and explain a theoretical perspective that best aligns with this social problem and lastly use that theoretical perspective(s) to explain how this selected social problem came to be and how it is perpetuated. Inequality in the workplace has been taking place since the late 1970and mid 1990’s (Hamermesh,1999). There are more women in the workplace than men, but the pay for women still is lower than the male counterpart for doing the same job (Sullivan, 2016). This is correct across all industries, with women in Japan earning only half of what men do (Sullivan, 2016). Many jobs that pay low and are looked down on are still female dominated for example, secretaries, receptionist and dental hygienists.
