Music Final Notes: Composers: Schubert - lieder: piano + singer (equal importance), German canonical poetry, important to german nationalism and what people actually cared about. Element being like folk song, “authentic voice of german people” say “it’s probably a poem by famous german poet, the words seem regular, syllabic” Wagner -opera: “music dramas” stories about gods and mythical stuff. Singers and orchestra (orchestra contributes to drama in a huge way, gives information that singers on stage don’t even know about. Leitmotif -melodic element (motto?) concise and recognizable that he uses to mark things, like every time a lizard is on stage, he plays a certain melody. Music is very continuous, goes on for hours without resolving. Harmony, vocal lines, hardly ever get strophic songs. Its line after line of dialogue. Sprawling, goes on and on. Open and close Brahms - orchestra: four square phrases, usually. Classic phrase structure, classical orchestra. Contrapuntal , voices on top of each other, variations on a theme. Nobility about it. Learnedness about it, very refined.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
