1Professional Development PlanGregory WilsonWalden University
Professional Development PlanMy personal professional development plan (PDP) is a strategic plan that I will use to track and accomplish my career goals. To make an effective PDP, I must be self-aware and knowledgable of the leadership style that best fits my personality. As Shory & Manasa (2014) stated, successful leadership often often surfaces when people become aware of critical personal experiences in their life, understand the driving forces, and respond by rethinking about self, redirect their moves and reshape their actions. Self-awareness is going to be essential in the development process of my PDP. My PDP will consist of three goals namely to earn my DBA degree, develop a non-profit that addresses the lack of male mentors in the African-American community, and financial independence through job opportunities. Goal 1: Earn My DBAMy first goal will be to earn my doctorates of business administration with a concentration in leadership. Obtaining my DBA will assist me both professionally and personally. With a DBA in leadership, I will be able to improve my leadership skills, leading to C-level positions within an organization. It will also satisfy a promise that I made to my parents after receiving my master’s in business administration (MBA). Shortly after receiving my MBA,my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was content with not furthering my education until she made me promise to continue and enroll in a doctoral program. The professional benefits and my promise to my mother, make this goal a top priority.Goal 1 NarrativeEarning my DBA is my number one goal. In comparison with my other goals, earning my DBA will allow me to grow professionally and fulfill the promise I made to my mother. Professionally, a DBA in leadership will provide me with invaluable skills and credibility in 2
leadership that organizations are looking for. Obtaining my DBA will also provide me with the insight needed to follow my passion of helping others. My skills and abilities gained will become useful in my approach to mentoring young adults in the community. Self-awareness will be a vital in achieving this goal. Self-awareness involves monitoring our inner worlds, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs (Davis, 2019). Being self-aware in my educational journey gives me the motivation needed to complete this challenging task. I will focus on three essential steps to accomplish this goal that include time management, support from my peers, and self-reflection. Each of these steps is vital to the completion of my DBA degree. If one of these steps is missing from my PDP it could put this goal in jeopardy.Managing my time wisely will be valuable in making progress toward this goal. I have invested financial resources in a personal home office space that provides me with a quiet and private workplace at home. I equipped the home office with time management tools such as a desk calendar, literature on time management, and filing cabinets. These visual time
