-1Developmental Studies: Reading Notes WEEK 1: UNDP, Human Development Report 2005 Chapter 1: The State of Human Development “the test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” -FDR. The millenium development goals (MDG’s) were a set of time-bound and quantitative targets for reducing extreme poverty and extending universal rights by 2015. After 5 years, their progress is being assessed. Although the world has the financial, technological and human resources to make a decisive breakthrough in human development, the assessment of current trends says that the MDG’s may be missed by a wide margin. Although the developing world has experienced rapid social progress and rising living standards, human development advances still fall far short of the goals and the progress anticipated. Human development is about building human capabilities - increasing the range of things
