Film Response 5, Question 2:
The Namesake
In the film
The Namesake
, Ashima undergoes a huge transition in her life by
marrying Asoke and moving to the United States without her family by her side. Towards
the end of the movie, she states that she had made a family in the United States, and she
shows how much she has changed since when she first arrived in America. Ashima
changes during her time in the United States because she is in a new environment with an
extremely different culture, and her children grew up completely surrounded by this new
culture. As said in class, transformation is inevitable. Adapting to change is how humans
and animals survive. No matter how much a person wants to stick to “how things are”,
they will change in some way whether they like it or not. South Asian immigrants
struggle with trying to keep their culture alive in their families, they feel as if this new
culture is threatening, so they try to keep it out as much as possible.
