Fahmid Alam Sep. 25, 2019 APUSH: Unit I Exam Study Guide Terms to Know: Colonial Women - often had many chores, including taking care of children, cooking, laundry, etc. and were expected to keep the families together, as well as to keep their religious views intact Columbian Exchange - The exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and technologies between the Americas and the rest of the world following Columbus's voyages. Encomienda System - It gave settlers the right to tax local Native Americans or to make them work. In exchange, these settlers were supposed to protect the Native American people and convert them to Christianity Iroquois Confederacy - a group of Native American nations in eastern North America joined together under one general government(democracy). Was composed of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. 5 Civilized Tribes - The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole. Cherokee - Split up into 7 different clans, and accepting of other races as equals, even allowing them to join their clans, and be branded as a Cherokee. They consisted of mostly farmers, and they had a distinct sense of animism, believing that everything including non living things had a soul in them. Lakota Sioux - American Indian tribe that started using horses in the 17th century. This allowed them to change from farming to nomadic buffalo hunting. Likely the most stereotypical Indians. Pueblos - Above ground houses made of a heavy clay called adobe. Conquistadors - Spanish conquerors of the Americas. Atlantic Trade - 3-way trade b/w Europe America/West Indies and Africa; revolved around slavery (slavery, cash crops, goods for slave societies) Christopher Columbus - Italian navigator who discovered the New World in the service of Spain while looking for a route to China (1451-1506). Factors Which Contributed to Exploration of the New World - God, gold, and glory. Treaty of Tordesillas - A 1494 agreement between Portugal and Spain, declaring that newly discovered lands to the west of an imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean would belong to Spain and newly discovered lands to the east of the line would belong to Portugal. Colonial Slavery - Existed in all colonies. First slaves arrived in Jamestown in 1619. Bartolome de Las Casas - First bishop of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. He devoted most of his life to protecting Indians from exploitation. His major achievement was the New Laws of 1542, which limited the ability of Spanish settlers to compel Amerindians to labor.
