Week 7 discussion 1 SOCW 6111 Identify internal and external barriers of the client and social worker. Internal barriers when interacting with clients are sometimes difficult to handle and can be very challenging. Staying present mentally, maintaining self-awareness, inner health and actively engaging with clients are necessary to obtain a positive outcome in therapy. To accomplish these tasks social workers must take care of themselves personally and professionally. Social workers may tune out the client mentally, while they are in an session if they are tired, bored or disinterested. Focus must remain on the client and not the issues of the social worker (Geller & Greenberg, 2012). According to Geller & Greenberg (2012), challenges social workers may face include countertransference, tolerance of uncertainty, stress, and proper use of energy. Countertransference in which the social worker projects their feelings unconsciously onto their client.
