TRANSGENDER INEQUALITY IN TODAY’S SOCIETY 2 IntroductionIn today’s society, there are numerous pronouns used to identify gender, the term transgender refers to an individual with whose gender identity or expression differs from that of identity or expression of the sex that they were assigned at birth (García, 2018). Transgender identity has been referenced in history throughout the ages, although the term “transgender” is a more modern term. Inequality for the transgender individual is a prevalent issue in today’s society, with discrimination noted in the work place, the medical community and in the community setting. This discrimination and inequality puts an already vulnerable population at a higher risk for violence and poverty, and at a higher risk of receiving inadequate healthcare and legal protection. HistorySince the beginning of documented history, there have been references of transgender individuals and the inequalities that they faced dating back to the days of the pharaohs. In 220 AD Roman Emperor Elagabalus became known for wearing female clothing and makeup and forexpressing characteristics deemed eccentric, Elagabalus also offered a reward to any doctor that could give him female genitalia. He was assassinated and replaced as emperor at the age of 18 (MacDonald, 2018). In the early 14thcentury Jewish poet Kalonymus ben Kalonymus penned a poem regarding being born a man when they should have been born a woman (Schirmann-Fleischer, 1997). In 1395, a transgender woman Eleanor Rykener was arrested for prostitution, the severity of the offence seen as Eleanor having male sex parts and presenting as a female (Strauss, 2018). In the 19thcentury, transgender individuals were often arrested and jailed in insane asylums, and/or later arrested and publicly tried for crimes against society related to their

There are also numerous accounts of transgender individuals that fought in the American Civil War, Albert Cashier being one of the better know names. Albert fought bravely through 40 battles and worked as a farmer after the war until 1911, when after being injured in a car accidentwas discovered to be biologically a female and was confined to an insane asylum (Hendricks, 2017). There have been numeral incidents outlined since then, including some very recent eventsin the last few years. In 2016, several southern states introduced legislation that discriminated against transgender individuals and the transgender community. These legislations or “bathroom bills” essential required individuals to use the restroom that coincided with the sex they were assigned at birth in all public institutes and businesses (García, 2018). As controversial as this seemed, it paled in comparison to the levels of discrimination that Mississippi’s house bill HB 1523 did.
