contact with well child visits. Primary care providers are important in promoting a healthy development prior to the child beginning school. The provider uses the information obtained to compare the child’s performance based on the stage of development. Developmental monitoring aids in recognizing if the child is at risk for developmental delay. Based on the child’s age the essential components of this assessment start with a complete physical assessment including a blood pressure measurement, height, weight, BMI, growth, visual and hearing screening, sensory development. The patient’s fine and gross motor skills, cognitive development, communication skills, language development, and parent-child communication should be observed as well. (Charles, 2013) There are many screening tools that are beneficial for identifying a developmental delay.
