1Running head: THE GREAT SOCIETY: MEDICARE AND MEDICAIDThe Great Society: Medicare and Medicaid“The Great Society was an ambitious series of policy initiatives, legislation and programsspearheaded by President Lyndon B. Johnson with the main goals of ending poverty, reducing crime, abolishing inequality and improving the environment” (History.com Editors, 2018). President Johnson established the Great society to try to decrease the percentage on poverty and to help people that were underprivileged. The goal was to create a society that was equal to all to include racial injustice. The agenda of this program was to aid in education, attack on disease, Medicare, urban renewal, beautification, conservation, development of depressed regions, a widescale fight against poverty, control and prevention of crime and delinquency, and the removal of obstacles to the right to vote (ITCA, 2015). All of the reforms that Johnson presented to the people gave them hope and they trusted him to help make America better. All of these initiatives were a part of President John F. Kennedy’s agenda, but when he was assassinated the American people sort of looked at PresidentJohnson to continue the movement. The Great Society was successful in some of its goals, but it failed to eliminate suffering in some areas that America was suffering in such as the civil rights. The percentage of people living below the poverty line after President Johnson’s administration was cut in nearly in half. One of the programs that was put in place from the Great Society is Medicare and Medicaid. The two main groups of Americans that were uninsured at the time were the elderly and the poor (History Editors, 2018). Many of the Republicans and some southern Democrats had shut down the idea before his presidency. These programs were signed into law in 1964 once
