Universal Testing Machine: A universal testing machine (UTM), also known as a universal tester, materials testing machine or materials test frame, is used to test the tensile strength and compressive strength of materials. The "universal" part of the name reflects that it can perform many standard tensile and compression tests on materials, components, and structures. (Write some more about UTM from internet).

Tensile strength test of MS bars. 2. Compressive and tensile strength test of concrete. 3. Compressive and tensile strength test of cement mortar. 4. Bending test of structural members. Apparatus: List out according to procedure. Procedure: i. Take 3 samples of MS bar and measure their weights using a balance. ii. Measure the length of each sample bar using a scale. iii. Measure the diameters of each bar using a slide calipers. iv. Turn at least 9” of each bar (near middle) using a lathe machine. This is necessary in order to obtain a uniform cross section and to define the failure zone. v. Measure the turning diameter of each bar using slide calipers. vi. Tighten one bar inside the jaws of UTM keeping the turned portion in the middle of jaws. vii. Record the initial gauge length from deformation gauge. viii. Operate the UTM at slow rate.
