Chapter 8: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12 Chapter 10: 1-8, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17-19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30 1. What is the difference between a genetic screen and a genetic selection? In a screen, the desired phenyotype must be identified by looking through many viable mutagenized organisms. In a selection, the only organisms that live are those with the desired type of mutation. 2. What are the chemical and functional properties of RNA that distinguish it from DNA? Why do these properties support the idea that RNA was the first biological molecule? A 2’ oxygen prevents double-helix formation. This allows complex secondary strucutres that can catalyze bioloical reactions. RNA has the capacity to both encode information, AND act as an enzyme. 3. Describe three major differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic transcription.
