Ruthanne Haug Period 10 Young Goodman Brown Impromptu Number 4 In the short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the reoccurring theme of the loss of innocence is symbolized by Faith’s pink ribbons. In the beginning of the story, Young Goodman Brown holds his innocence, “ So they parted; and the young man pursued his way, until, being about to turn the corner by the meeting-house, he looked back, and saw the head of Faith peeping after him, with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink ribbons” (Hawthorne, para. 6). This quote shows the reader how Young Goodman Brown views Faith’s ribbons to be sweet, and kind even when the atmosphere around him suggests a dreary mood. Young Goodman Brown is still pure in heart, which is why the ribbons stay close to Faith. However, unlike the beginning of the story Young Goodman Brown shifts when he loses his innocence and turns to evil.
