PAGE 6 TO WHOM OR WHAT COULD WE GRANT PERSONHOOD? WHAT CRITERION IS UNDER OR OVERVALUED? In order to be granted personhood, I believe that something must have a soul. For context, a soul in this case is synonomous with a conscience. Having a conscience is the ability to make controlled decisions to do or not do something based around wants and needs. Humans are granted personhood because humans possess a brain that is biologically superior to all other forms of life by the fact that it is capable to defy instincts or follow them. In layman’s terms, we have the ability to choose what we want to do even if it is not necessarily healthy or rational according to biological standards. Personhood is therefore granted to humans and not animals based on these standards. Humans can choose to not eat even if they are hungry, while animals will mostly likely eat the food in front of them if it is presented, against their better judgement. When it comes to the exceptions, babies and the mentally disables come to mind. Babies have the capacity to
