Ryan is going to take over the XRS Laser project and is looking for some insight. Larry, a
colleague, has offered some insight into the project’s previous team leader, John, and some of the
issues the team may have been facing. Larry was asked to participate as an outsider in a team
building retreat for the XRS group. His invitation by John’s department head, Kate, might be
viewed as an ad-hoc of intervention effort. Kate was concerned about the project’s lack of
progress during John’s two years of leadership and worried that John might be a large part of the
problem.
Based on the description from Larry John exhibited a number of behaviors inconsistent with
effective leadership and team-building (Warrick, 2014). John spent most of his retreat attempting
to dominate via interruption and disruption of activates or “acting the playboy,” being aloof and
cynical toward the exercises (Brown, 2011). John displayed cliquish behaviors with a select
