Benedict Arnold is a name that usually pops up when talking about The Revolutionary War. Benedict Arnold was an early American hero of the Revolutionary War which took place from 1775-1983. He later became one of the most infamous traitors in U.S. history after he switched sides and fought for the British. In 1776, which was at the beginning of the war, he stopped the British invasion of New York at the Battle of Lake Champlain. The following year, he played a crucial role in making British General John Burgoyne’s army surrender at Saratoga. Arnold’s actions in the beginning of the war have put him at the status of being an American hero. However, back in the 1770’s, he wasn’t regarded as a hero, and he didn’t receive recognition in general. Because he wasn’t recognized for his heroism, he wanted to go to a side that would appreciate his work. In 1779, he entered into secret negotiations with the British. He agreed to betray the United States at West Point in return for money and a command in the British army. The US discovered his tactics, and they started the pursuit to catch him
