Summarize the circumstances and decisions that resulted in Alfred Dreyfus being wrongfully accused and convicted of treason. What role did the media play? The whole situation started with the discovery of a secret memorandum addressed to military attaché at the German embassy. When the information was examined, it was determined that the informant was trained in artillery. The document was present to high members of the military and none of them recognized the handwriting. The theory was the informant must be a newly commissioned staff member considering no one recognized the writing. There were 4 bureaus and it was determined that you needed to be in one of these bureaus to gain access to this type of information. The name the Mercier’s ministry decided upon was Alfred Dreyfus. Dreyfus graduated from École Polytechnique as a student artillery officer, he won Captains rank, attended war college, and dabbled in graphology. This theory did not thrive outside of Mercier’s ministry. The President was unimpressed, but Gabriel Hanotaux still launched an investigation. The Graphologist from the Bank of France concluded that someone other than Dreyfus wrote the document in question. Mercier was unhappy with the response so he hired other experts to find one who agreed with his theory. Dreyfus’s script and the bordeau were showed side by side to show how the traitor forged his own handwriting with calculated discrepancies.
