Thebody produces steroidsnaturally to support suchfunctions as fighting stress andpromoting growth anddevelopment. But some peopleuse steroid pills, gels, creams,or injections because they thinksteroids can improve theirsports performance or the waythey look.Anabolic steroidsareartificially produced hormonesthat are the same as, or similarto, androgens, the male-typesex hormones in the body. There are more than 100variations of anabolic steroids. The most powerful androgen istestosterone(pronounced:tess-toss-tuh-rone). Althoughtestosterone is mainly a maturemale hormone, girls' bodiesproduce smaller amounts.Testosterone promotes themasculine traits that guysdevelop during puberty, such asdeepening of the voice andgrowth of body hair.Testosterone levels can alsoaffect how aggressive a personis.Athletes sometimes takeanabolic steroids because oftheir testosterone-like effects.Another group of steroids, sometimes calledsteroidalsupplements, containsdehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA) and/orandrostenedione (also knownas andro). For the most part, steroidal supplements, whichused to be found at health foodstores or gyms, are now illegaland require a prescription.DHEA is one of the fewexceptions and can still bebought over the counter.
