When children have strongrelationship with an adult they are less likely to show unwanted behaviour, thelanguage develops more quickly because they feel confident to talk to the staff. Thepractitioner can plan more accurately as they understand children’s developmentalneeds and know their interest, practitioner are also able to respond to children moreeffectively because they can recognise their expressions and emotions.The most important way to built relationship is to communicate not just about wordson communication it is also about our facial expression, body language and gesturesThere are also other principles of building a relationship being consistent whether thisis keeping rules and behaviour boundaries or making sure you do not have moodswings this helps the children and young adults know where they are and where theirboundaries are. Being fair when you are sorting out conflicts and disagreements bylistening to what they say and not jumping to conclusions then helping them ifpossible to find ways through them. Children and young people will need to receiverespect and courtesy from us in order that they can extend these skills to others.Speaking to children and young people using voice tones that are warm and courteousand use words such as please and thank you. Valuing and respecting individual meansshowing that we are comfortable with their differences, children, young people andother adults will all have different strengths, talents and attitudes. Children and youngpeople need to know that they can rely on us and part of this is keeping our word notkeeping promises or honouring commitments means that a child or young person willtend not to trust us again or may keep some distant from us. It is necessary. Part ofworking professionally with children and their families is to monitor and then, ifnecessary adapt own behaviour. If the child finds you too overpowering and then youmight have to alter your style to be gentle. Confidentiality is essentially about trustand respect. Parents and other professionals will often give you confidentialinformation on the basis that it will be helpful to you when you work, they trust thatthis information will not be passed on to others to become the source of gossip orinterest.
