Media and Sexism2Media and SexismThe media has a big influence on society’s perception of men, women, gender roles, and appearances. It also shapes the definition of feminism and masculinity. The media tends to portray men as being a strong, dominant, and an authoritative figure. Society is more lenient andacceptable of violent inappropriate behaviors from men. In the video Tough Guise, it was stated that the media helps to construct violent masculinity as a cultural norm. Also, the video shows how most crimes (assault, murder, domestic violence, rape, and sexual abuse) are committed by men. The violent act of these men has caused much pain and suffering to others. “It is rarer still to hear thoughtful discussions about the ways our culture defines manhood” (Adams, 2013, p.343). The media uses men fighting, killing, and shooting guns as a representation of masculinity.
